You have most likely seen the posts about the Expressions of Healing program sponsored by Durham-Middlefield Youth and Family Services. Perhaps you have dismissed the event, believing that you are not an artist, and therefore not qualified to submit a piece for consideration.
Those who have participated in the event, either as an organizer or an artist, invite you to reframe your perception of what an artist is and does, and in doing so, understand that your contributions can come in many forms.
Consider the work of David Lynch, the famous director known for his avant-garde filmmaking and work in television. He too started as a traditional artist who made the decision that his work did not have to be confined to a canvas.
Set aside time to experience the TED Talk presented by Shane Koyczan, a spoken word artist who breaks hearts with his take on the effects of bullying. No paintbrush is needed for him to convey his message.
Alexander Calder, a sculptor, created the mobile after realizing his work could be three-dimensional. The precedent he set influenced many young people with a wire hanger, some yarn, and an idea.
DMYFS wishes to remind you that your form of expression does not have to “follow the rules.” Your contributions, in whatever form they take, are what make the Expressions of Healing event reflective of community through the diversity of ideas that come together.
